Abstract

This article inquired about the own profile of diplomatic asylum, in relation to other legal figures that, at the regional and international level, also aim at the protection of persecuted persons ―or with justified fears of being so― for several reasons. It also provides a review of the normative development of this form of asylum and an analysis of the main aspects of the Caracas Convention of 1954 on Diplomatic Asylum: its legal nature, places where asylum may be granted, unilateral determination of asylum, offences covered, qualification for the requirement of immediacy and procedural aspects of asylum.
