This article mentions the background of the inter-American system up to the adoption of the Inter-American Democratic Charter, its subsequent evolution, its close interrelation with the principles of Non-Intervention and Self-determination
of Peoples and the effective application of the instruments referred to democracy in some specific cases to establish if there is indeed a democratic legal obligation in the American continent.
