Rebellion and Deditio in Hrotsvita’s Gesta Ottonis (The Deeds of Otto I)

Hrotsvita of Gandersheim’s Gesta Ottonis (The Deeds of Otto I) is a historical epic with a strongly programmatic and propagandistic character. This paper explores the legal institution known as deditio described in it, as a resolution to a conflict that pitted members of the royal family against each other. To this end, it is proposed a critical-philological reading of the source, comparing it with other sources that also recount the episode and analyzing it in legal and political terms within its historical context.
